Greenport Military Wall Of Honor
In 1942, during the height of World War II, Greenport High School principal Joseph Walker, this building’s original principal, established what would later become known as the school’s Military Wall. As young men and women from the Greenport community entered military service following the Pearl Harbor attack, Principal Walker would request the newly enlisted to send a photograph of themselves in uniform so that he could frame and display them until they came home from the war. While he may not have envisioned a permanent display that would recognize these veterans, the wall, which began as a modest wartime tribute, has become a permanent fixture in our school that has reflected the patriotism and sacrifice of Greenport alumni for decades.
Today, the wall stands not only as a tribute to military service, but also as a historical timeline of Greenport’s community identity and Principal Joseph Walker’s original vision of remembrance and civic pride.
We would like to sincerely thank our Board of Education and administrators for their support of this Military Wall of Honor project. Special thanks to Eric Daly for building the frames, the Interact and History Club advisors and students for their dedication, and Joan Dinizio for her contributions throughout the process. We also extend our appreciation to the American Legion and the Greenport community for helping us honor the service and sacrifice of our veterans.
