Rutgers Trophy Remembered
In 1958, the Greenport Football Team was awarded the Rutgers Trophy for being the BEST football team in Suffolk County. For four entire seasons prior to the award, the Porters football team was undefeated each season.
That historic team was under the leadership of Coach Dorrie Jackson and it was the first time the Porters have received the prestigious Rutgers Trophy.
Tim Morey noticed that there was no recognition of the trophy in the school gym, so he spearheaded a campaign to have a banner made. The new banner was presented during the Homecoming Game in October.
The picture above shows the Homecoming ceremony. In the picture, from left to right, are Todd Gulluscio, GHS Athletic Director; Fred Terry, Carl Utz, Dave Cervone, Gary Jackson (son of Greenport’s legendary coach Dorrie Jackson), Tim Morey (who spearheaded the campaign for the Rutger’s Banner) and Greenport High School Principal Len Skuggevik.
The banner now proudly hangs in the school Gym
